Serious Gaming - Is it serious?

Computer games are part of our everyday culture. It makes sense then to ask whether or not this medium, associated with fun and leisure, can be used to aid learning. Serious games can be defined as games that do not have entertainment as main goal but do use similar concepts and rules to achieve objectives related to government or corporate training, education, health, communication or marketing. Games provide immersive and engaging environments, where the user has the control, receives immediate feedback, learns from errors and interacts (collaborates and competes) with other players (human or not). So, after the initial stage of research on this area has been done, we can answer the question: how effective and efficient are these environments to learn?
