Second Language Development
This interview discusses the shift from traditional views of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) to more dynamic perspectives on Second Language Development (SLD). Early theories based on Universal Grammar viewed language learning as guided by innate principles, while connectionism and usage-based models argued that language emerges from exposure, patterns, and interaction.A central focus is Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST), which sees language as an open, adaptive, and constantly changing system shaped by cognitive, social, and contextual factors. Larsen-Freeman argues that learners are active agents, development is variable and nonlinear, and there is no fixed end state in language.
